oh, so that’s what that is…
Do you ever have those moments when you thought you had no idea what people were talking about, but then you realized you did…you just thought about it in a different way or called it something else so you didn’t make the connection?
That happened for me last year right around this time.
I was living in Paris and some of my classmates started chattering about Roland Garros and how excited they were about it. I just listened silently because I had no idea what they were talking about. Eventually I realized they were talking about tennis, and given that I’ve never actually played tennis in my life I didn’t give it much thought. I somehow got talked into going with them to see a match and it was so much fun!!!
I was hooked.
Well, fast forward several months to me listening to some friends talking about tennis here in the States. One of them was going on about last year’s French Open and how fab it was, and so on. I mentioned how I was in Paris for Roland Garros {as if to change the subject} when my friend kindly enlightened me to the fact that Roland Garros IS the French Open.
Aha! Lightbulb illuminated.
I mean, it makes sense…why would French people call it the French Open?
I still think of it as Roland Garros though…

This is great, because we went through the same thing some time back!
Hope the rest of your weekend is wonderful!

lol! silly rabbit! trix are for kids
… it sounds like name. Does it mean anything?
I guess it’s sort of how a “German Shepherd” is just a “Shepherd dog” in Germany…
Jansen – Roland Garros was a French fighter pilot who was shot down in WW1. He frequented a tennis centre in Paris while he was a student there, and after his death they named it after him. The stadium is where the French Open is held, so now they’ve named the tournament after him as well!!
Oh, these moments are so precious. Too bad they aren’t so few.
Loved this post!
Haha, that’s awesome! If it makes you feel any better I would not have made the connection either
.
Hi
Thanks for stopping by. To think, if you had just waited a week to go to Monaco (… you could have been paying even more extortionate prices for everything!).
You’ll be pleased to hear we still call Wimbledon “Wimbledon”.
oh i love it because i’m the same way! haha those lightbulb moments keep me grounded.
Oh, those facepalm moments.
I wouldn’t have known either! But look at it this way, you are now armed with a fun trivia fact to impress your friends..
ahhh hahaha! i’m glad i’m not the only one that does this
Happens to me all the time.
